ABOUT
------
RORHOF is an independent publishing house based in Bolzano-Bozen, Italy.
Under the same roof co-exist a bookshop, a workshop, a library and a gallery.
------
------
CONTEXT
RORHOF draws its name from the farmhouse founded in 1468 by Michel im Rorhof in Gries. It used to be a tradition in South Tyrol, the northernmost Italian region, that families lived and worked on the same premises and that their farming activities fed into a circular and self-sustainable economy. A wide array of grape derivatives were farmed, transformed and sold at the property. Today, an ample range of thoughts and things are ideated, designed and carried out on the same premises and principles, especially that of self-production. The farmstead still acts as a powerhouse where several produce are born and bread, and from where they depart.
------
RORHOF collaborates with public and private educational institutions, local, national and international bodies devoted to the development of culture and the arts, such as research institutions, universitites, art academies, libraries, archives, art institutions and museums.
RORHOF operates according to the principles of cooperation, solidarity and sustainability for the benefit of people of all age groups, with all types of physical or cognitive abilities, without any discrimination based on age, identity identification, religion or socio-economic condition.
------
Based on the assumption that ideas are better spaced than caged, Rorhof strives to contextualise the contemporary through the creation of various containers, adapting the medium to the message that is being communicated. Be it books, workshops, exhibitions, documentaries or residencies, Rorhof aims to spread and spatialise ideas in a coherently democratic and artistic manner. The focus is on the lived experience of communities faced with questions of identity, imprisonment, migration, culture and nurture, be these to the North, to the South, to the East or to the West.
------
Based on the conviction that a work is never complete, the books, the exhibitions, the documentaries and the residencies conceived and curated at and by RORHOF before starting their travels. Rorhof was created in order to publish independently without the need to compromise. This endeavour is possible thanks to the generous support by our community of readers.
------
RORHOF operates by providing non-prescriptive readings. The book often acts as text and is seen as a portable carrier of ideas that travel as, through and in space. The exhibition is an extension of the the book into new contexts and containers. Depending on the message central to a specific project, the medium changes and adapts.
------
RORHOF pursues its social objectives by drawing on its own resources, voluntary work, service users and organisations with the aim of social solidarity and ecological sustainability. Rorhof aims to include in its activity all inhabitants of the local, national and international community without discrimination of age, religion or identity; to integrate protected or disadvantaged categories within the work circuit through socio-cultural channels and means; to raise awareness around issues of social relevance through the artistic and cultural medium, both digital and analogue;
