PRISON PHOTOGRAPHY
Nicolò Degiorgis et al.
Prison Photography is a collection of 137 shots taken by the inmates of the Penal Institution of Bolzano/Bozen, Italy during the photography course that Nicolò Degiorgis held there between 2013 and 2017.
Playing with and around the limitations imposed by the prison’s own isolation, the volume illustrates the world as seen through the eyes of incarcerated individuals. Divided into thematic chapters spanning a range of photographic techniques, the book reflects on the medium of photography as much as on its ability to act as a means of escape from the monotony of detention.
Prison Photography develops in the folds of the contrast between the inmates’ urgency to communicate and the capacity of photography to exceed the limits imposed by time and space.
